Last month a UCL study described our smartphones as the place where we live, with humans able to seek refuge from the world around them via the smartphone in their pocket in much the same way a snail retreats into its shell. UCL also found that often a single app was able to represent the totality of all a smartphone does for the user, and so our curious minds started to whir.
We decided to ask UK smartphone users which media and entertainment apps they have to have at their fingertips, the apps they can access with one click when they unlock their smartphone (their One Click Wonders!) as well as finding out more about attitudes to smartphones and the apps people can’t live without!
Between 4th – 7th June 2021 we ran an online survey with 1,002 smartphone owners aged 16+, representative in terms of age and reflective of the UK across gender, region, SEG and ethnicity. App categories asked about included social media, messaging, video calling, video streaming, music, podcast, audiobook, radio, sport, health/wellness, news and gaming.
Some of the top findings are summarised in the infographic below. We have plenty more detail in the data and will be adding some category specific insights to the blog in the coming weeks.
